The Gospel in Song
Words & Music by Christy Kohnle

When she first set out to intentionally create songs that might be helpful to the Church, Christy began from a posture of awe, as she considered what Jesus did for us, why He did it, and the path by which the King of the Universe humbled Himself, paid our debt, and saved all who believe. This song grew out of days and weeks spent pondering these truths. The verses of "Jesus, the Innocent Lamb" present the gospel in song form, while the chorus gives voice to our heartfelt response to His goodness and sacrifice.
This song can be used for all styles of worship, sung by choirs and congregations ranging from traditional to contemporary. It is especially poignant when used during Lenten and Holy Week services; its focus on Jesus' sacrifice is felt most deeply on Good Friday.
Verse 1
Jesus Christ came down to earth,
Noble God of humble birth;
Came to set His sinful children free.
Boundless Grace and Perfect Love
Condescended from above
So we could have life eternally.
So we could have life eternally.
Chorus
And we sing holy, holy, holy the Lamb who was slain;
Glory and honor and laud be to His excellent name,
And jubilant praise without ceasing be to the blessed I AM.
Merciful, beautiful Savior; Jesus, the Innocent Lamb.
Verse 2
Redemption through His blood alone
Was required to atone,
Though we stood defenseless in our plea.
Jesus Christ, the Lord of Life,
Made the greatest sacrifice,
When He paid our price at Calvary.
When He paid our price at Calvary.
Chorus
Verse 3
And now our perfect, living Lord
Reigns with God forevermore,
Bearing witness to our cancelled sin,
Granting access to the throne,
Gained through Christ, and Christ alone,
As we now claim victory through Him.
As we now claim victory through Him.
Chorus
Ending
And jubilant praise without ceasing be to the blessed I AM.
Merciful, beautiful Savior; Jesus, the Innocent Lamb.
Jesus Christ, the Lord of Life: the Innocent Lamb.
